"Decades have passed since the age where men warred against each other in the pursuit of land and wealth. We have long since learned of a greater threat to us. A threat that flies down from the sky and brings fiery destruction." King Arthur's voice boomed loudly in the entrance of the Dragon's Den. His men, exhausted from the long ascent began to shift nervously with the sudden break of silence as they shot glances behind him to the gaping mouth of darkness beyond. They had only just taken a moment to rest and now they found themselves rising back to their feet.
"Dragons have terrorized our people and slaughtered our livestock long enough. It's time we show these scaly beasts the full force of the human offensive!"
Arthur, King of Kings, then pulled his sword from its sheath and raised it high above his head. It suddenly became emblazoned in golden light cast out by intense flames that seemed to emanate from Excalibur's very core. The cave was instantly engulfed in its light and seemed to find every speck of darkness that attempt to hide, snuffing it out completely. Lady Catherine stood beside him now her golden locks seeming to ignite in the glow of The Holy Sword. The tense air had been completely abandoned as a chant rose from amongst the present Knights.
"Glory to Arthur! Glory to Catherine!" The chanting rose in intensity as men and women readied their weapons. "Glory to Ferthorian! Glory to Arthur!" The cheers were now accompanied by the bashing of swords against shields creating a crashing crescendo that crashed against the walls of the cave and cascaded down the protective canopy of Excalibur's Light. "GLORY TO CATHERINE! GLORY TO EXCALIBUR!"
In the excitement, those present had not realized the shift in illumination had caused their eyes to need time to see. They had not failed to see that the ground did not shake from their chanting. They celebrated far too soon. For the walls that they now leaned against to gather their failing strength were not walls. Arthur turned back in time to watch the boulder that rested against the mouth of the cave open its large green slitted eye to stare directly at him. He felt the cold reach of fear in his stomach as he realized they had significantly underestimated their prey.
"Daddy?" A small voice from far away spoke to Arthur.
Arthur felt the flames warm his face as the room became a valley of fire. He turned back towards the entrance deeper within the cave to see that it had been the rock. He called out to his men and to turned to his bride.
"There's someone at the door daddy."
She wasn't there anymore. She had already drawn her sword. Flames danced around her as she charged toward the nearest torrent of golden-red light. He heard the screams from all around him.
"Daddy!"
Arthur jerked back into himself to see the smiling olive-skinned face of his daughter Odel. His sudden movement seemed to amuse the young girl because she immediately began giggling. He forced a smile as he reached down and scooped her up, placed her on his right shoulder, and walked quietly toward the door. He felt his nerves calm almost instantly in the familiar sharp scent of medical herbs that filled his lungs as he took in the air of his home.
He needed to stay in the present; the horrors of this world were real enough. He had to protect her now. At any second he may just slip away again and he had to prevent that. He chuckled to himself as he pulled the latch to see his beautiful wife's dark hair and brown eyes. They brighten as she saw the two of them together. He relaxed further still somehow as he embraced her and closed the door to his home. This was his world.
